Shabbat Nachamu is so called because of the Haftorah (Isaiah 40:1) read in the synagogue that Shabbat in which the prophet Isaiah offers words of comfort (Nachamu) to the Jewish people. That Shabbat is also the first of seven Shabbatot which continue to broadcast Isaiah’s uplifting and encouraging words. These words usher us into the New Year. My mother’s life throughout most of her 96 years was hallmarked by her constant efforts to uplift and encourage others. Please take a moment to reconnect with my mother’s life at her webpage (http://www.pearlspage.com/) and please send me some of your memories so that I may publish them there. I want to thank each and every one of you for the support and words of consolation you provided me during this time. At this time of our nation’s struggle I close with a message also from Isaiah- For the L-rd hath comforted Zion; He hath comforted all her waste places, and hath made her wilderness like Eden, and her desert like the garden of the L-rd; joy and gladness shall be found therein, thanksgiving, and the voice of melody. (Isaiah 51:3) ------------------------------------------------------------- |
